Susan has been the Secretary on the SNHSA Board since 2012. “I joined the Board as a mother of an equestrian daughter, Nicole, to represent her and her barn, Big Air, now known as Balance Point Training. “I joined, thinking I would help on the Points Committee, then I became more involved, first working on the newsletter, then as Secretary and I never left.” Beginning in 2023, Susan also serves as Treasurer.

Susan feels her greatest contributions have been to the Points records and the designing and publishing Year-End Awards programs. She also enjoys normal secretarial duties, keeping the website updated, and working as the show secretary for many of the local horse shows.

“I have loved horses since I was a child, asking for trail rides on my birthday. I even attended Camp Fire Girls camps for two summers, riding horses daily for two weeks. But that was the extent of my involvement with horses, until some 25 years later, when my daughter’s friend invited her to attend horse camp with her. She was hooked and I didn’t object!”

Nicole is now a young adult and currently does not compete, but she continues to love horses and rides in her spare time.

“Although I began (with SNHSA) as an involved parent, I continue working on the Board! My hopes are to continue until I get tired of it!”

Susan and Nicole moved to Reno in 2008 when she accepted the position as Program Director of University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s Nevada Radon Education Program. She was previously of Auburn, AL, where she was Assistant Director of the Alabama Radon Education Program at Auburn University. Susan married Adrian Howe in 2009 and they reside in southeast Reno.
